Walking on leash
Have you ever heard someone say “He’s friendly” as their dog is running up to your dog on the street or at the park? Do you ever feel like saying “I don’t want the dogs to meet.” Know that saying “No” is doesn’t make you a bad person or mean.
A lot of dogs are not comfortable meeting another dog and this can be especially true when they are walking on a leash. Saying “No” to meeting on leash can show your dog that you are listening to them and care about what they need. This can help build trust and respect in your relationship with your dog. You may be asking yourself “How do I do this without upsetting the other person?”
I find the simplest explanation is always the best. In a nice, calm, respectful, but firm voice say “I do not want my dog to meet another dog. He is in training.” This helps to alleviate the situation without making anyone feel bad. People understand training your dog is important and will understand your request. Next time you are out enjoying a walk with your dog know that meeting another dog is one less thing you need to worry about.
