FAQs

Consultations and dog training lessons are mostly taught at our training facility. Our training facility is best to evaluate behaviors than doing a home visit and allows us to teach you and your dog without distractions. However we do occasionally make exceptions, especially for people with disabilities or for people who need specific help in a location specific to your dog’s needs. Tell us about your dog and we can discuss which training options will work best for you.

At Kona’s Dog Training, we believe a dog is a valuable member of your family. Finding the right dog trainer should also be valuable. That is why we come to your home and help you address the specific needs you have. You are unlike anyone else and so is your dog and we can help you become a great “pack” in a safe and humane way.

You may contact us by filling out our contact form, e-mail or phone and give a brief description of your specific needs. We will then get in touch with you to set up a 10-15 minute phone consult. During this time we will go into greater detail about the help you want and the concerns you might have with your dog. After the phone consult, we will set up an evaluation for us to come to your home and see firsthand everything that is happening there. We will also make sure all of your questions are answered about your dog’s behavior and how we train here at Kona’s Dog Training.

The prices vary based on the program you choose and based on your preferences. We can spend more time together with the larger programs, which means we’ll reach your goals together faster. The programs are customizable, too, so we’ll go over the detail and options that you have when we talk so we can make sure you can choose what the best fit is for you.

No, we do not offer payment plans. We do however, offer certain discounts for our training programs. Please contact us for more details.

There are many different training philosophies on how to train dogs. There will always be differences of opinion about some actions which some people will view as bad and others will view as good. This happens in any behavioral field of expertise and can lead to open discussions. Be assured that while training your dog, we will use the methods and tools that will be best for your dog and you. At no time will anything be used that will harm your dog, or your relationship with your dog. If your dog stays with us, your dog will live in our home with our pack.

We do not limit ourselves to one training method or training tool. We want to help build your relationship with your dog in many ways, which include food, praise, toys and affection. We also use many tools depending on your specific needs i.e. crates, slip leads, prong collars, head halters, harnesses and electronic collars. These are just some of the tools that can be helpful in training your dog.

We do not only teach basic and advanced obedience, but we also help you learn how to understand your dog’s behavior and why they do the things they do. We will help you address problem behaviors like barking, jumping, counter surfing, digging, biting. These are just to name a few, but teaching you to understand your dog and why they do things can help you to address these issues in a better, more effective way.

During the initial visit we will discuss in detail all of the training programs and what each one can offer you.

The first way to know this is to understand that what you have been doing at home hasn’t yet worked. Practice makes “pawfect”. Training with your dog only during the lessons will not help to get you a better dog. You will need to find time every day to work with your dog. Practicing the techniques and with the tools as often as possible and with every member of the family will help you and your dog grow into a happier family.

We expect you to be excited about the training and the possibilities of change. We want you to have the best possible relationship with your dog and the first step is to want that change as well. As long as you follow the training methods without change or modification we will always be here to help you with anything you may need.
